Thomas U. Walter first came to West Chester in 1830 as an employee of the renowned Philadelphia architect William Strickalnd. The contacts he made then led to his first commission in 1831 – the Market Street Market and Head House – for which the Borough paid him $7. By the time Walter left for Washington, DC in 1851 as the Architect of the Capitol, he was accredited with perhaps as many as 21 designs, many of which no longer exist. This tour will see those that remain, and where most of the others were.
Optional: Following the main tour, join our guide, A Roy Smtih, on a short tour of the UPTOWN Knauer Performing Arts Center (winner of 2019 Alliance Award)!
